NO_PLACEMENT is an exhibition about the era of the dissolution of globalization in the 21st century. In a time of pandemic, uncertainty, isolation, in search of other narrative modalities in art. The main video of the show was created on the remix of THIS_PLACEMENTS (2011 – FUNARTE Contemporary Art Award) on artistic nomadism, displacement and globalization. NO_PLACEMENT is an unfolding, a reflection from the pandemic experience of isolation, resulting in a single image, almost entropic, in a kind of sea of binary codes for an epic existence between technology and the Glauberian backwoods, where it reveals the remains of a pilgrimage in in the midst of this chaos experienced by totalizing dementia, which road to follow and what concept to hold on to in order to set life goals and make a coherent internal speech a deaf and indefinite path.

WATCH ONLINE 3D EXHIBITION

Oderzo/San Paolo, 3 marzo 2021.

LOG LINE / english

GLAUBER, CLARO composes the portrait of the greatest exponent of Brazilian cinema of all times, Glauber Rocha, in his Italian experience in parallel with his penultimate feature film CLARO (1975). This documentary brings back Rocha and his generation through memories by friends, collaborators and people who loved him, revealing unpublished facts from his years of exile till his rage at the 1980 Venice Film Festival. Rocha, sometimes hated or glorified, but almost always misunderstood made an essential contribution for the cinema worldwide, making it move forward, because only those who are so daring to believe that they can change the world, really succeed.

SINOPSIS

GLAUBER, CLARO is a creative documentary that composes a portrait of the greatest and most original exponent of Brazilian cinema of all times, Glauber Rocha, in his Italian experience. Glauber lived in Italy on several occasions, where having created and written several projects there. In 1975, in Rome, he shot one of his last feature films, CLARO (35mm, 110′, Italy) produced by Marco Tamburella. The director declares: “I want to see clear the contradictions of the mythological cradle of Western civilization. I want to make a Brazilian vision of Rome, or rather a testimony by the colonized on the land of colonization.”

40 years later, GLAUBER, CLARO chases Rocha’s experience in Italy through fragments of his Roman film CLARO, unpublished archival images and a collage of testimonies by those who have known him closely: fraternal friends, film critics, collaborators, and loved ones. Cinema, militancy, utopia, flow, movement, history, revolution turned into cinematographic art are the main topics we approach in this documentary. But State and censorship, media and culture, capitalism and humanism, post-colonialism and migration, are further issues addressed. A parallel between the socio-political context of 1975 with current reality is necessarily made, thus leading to a comparison between contemporary Italy and Brazil, the utopia of the 1970s and today’s dystopia.

Glauber Rocha supported an increasingly radical idea of cinema making while the world went in another direction. He, however, realized it too late. One year before his premature death at the age of 42, he had one of his deepest disappointments at the 1980 Venice Film Festival. Glauber leaves us a strong legacy, praised by international cinematography, despite being increasingly forgotten in the Brazilian panorama, where the lack of historical memory is a recurring practice. Dreamer, misfit, sweet, crazy, generous, rebellious, visionary and troublemaker – a man who had a different perspective of things, that saw beyond his present time and space, who did not bow to the rules and did not respect the status quo. Hated by some and glorified by others, considered either a madman or a genius, his essential contribution for the art of cinema worldwide cannot be ignored. His cinematography deserves to be remembered and unknown episodes should not be forgotten. Glauber Rocha, in an international scale, honoured Latin American filmmakers as few did. He helped cinema to go forward. Because only people who are passionate and crazy enough to believe that they can change the world, are the ones who can really do it.

ABOUT THE FILM CLARO

With Rome as its backdrop and Roman culture as its target, CLARO is a documentary-manifesto film or avant-garde cinematographic project that brings together several aspects of fiction. CLARO has neither narrative plot nor traditional structure as it mixes opera, documentary, improvisation, performance as well as various formats of personal intervention of the director in the film.Filmed in only two weeks in Rome with the Italian cult theatre director Carmelo Bene, the jazz clarinettist Tony Scott and the famous French nouvelle vague actress Juliet Berto, this irreverent and provocative film is one of the most authorial by Glauber.

César Meneghetti together with 52 artists from the Art Workshops of the Community of Sant’Egidio make their voices through on worrying themes affecting not only Italy but the whole world. Inclusion/Exclusionis an exhibition probing the space of collective emotions, vis a vis the paradoxes of contemporaneity. The pieces exhibited place themselves at the end of a thorough  process of training and deepening. Meneghetti once again entangles his work with theirs: the dialogic and educational encounter with the artist starts a process of co-responsibility and two way participation. The social and cultural representation and transformation of the surrounding world got strengthen, as much as the action of the Art Workshops towards a freed creativity. In the Art Workshops of the Community of Sant’Egidio people with disability implement their own truth and their thoughts. As they are freed from the process of exclusion and denial, they understand and represent the exclusion of others, being aware of the means available from generations of artists. Inclusion only opens to a new, braver and more humane possibility of future.

After the special project I \ O _IO IS ANOTHER at the “55th International Art Exhibition .The Venice Biennale”, the staff at MAXXI in Rome in 2015-2016 and O PERCURSO AUSENTE at MUBA (Museum of Fine Arts) of San Paolo, CÉSAR MENEGHETTI presents at the gallery CreArte Studio in Oderzo (TV) a new unpublished work BELOVED ONES # 02 – Veneto, curated by Carlo Sala, dedicated to the land from which, one hundred years ago, his paternal ancestors left to emigrate Brazil.

The title of the exhibition, translated into Italian as “my dear, my beloved”, is a kind of declaration of love and tribute to the ancestors that the artist has never known, but who have, in some way, contributed to his existence and his wandering around the world, camera in hand, on the trail of his identity and memory.

The exhibition will collect a corpus of works – videos, photographs, objects, installations – to continue a research started five years ago that touched the countries (Italy, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary) crossed by the family of Meneghetti during the journey that, along the ‘Europe, brought them to South America, they are jobs that deal with the concepts of belonging and homeland and at the same time they deny them, in favor of the concept of humanity. Migrations are a phenomenon that, since the dawn of history, has marked the destiny of man in search of better living conditions and that is why in the project the specific events of the artist’s family interweave and reflect with those of others people who have experienced similar experiences, putting their lives at stake. The author’s investigation thus creates a dialogic relationship between past and present, well summarized in his open question: “Could one speak of a collective database of the historical influence of patterns of the past in the present?”.

Recognition by the artist in Veneto (which pays particular attention to the town of Quarto d’Altino in the province of Venice where his ancestors lived) was made possible by the residence that Meneghetti will realize in May at CreArte Studio. In this period of time, the Brazilian author will retrace the places of origin of his family realizing a project that is procedural, relational and conceptual, where the realization process is the work itself. The material acquired during the residency will thus create an imaginary diary, composed of real and repertory images, family photos, true or presumed stories. The central themes of the project – memory and narration of migrations – will also be an opportunity to research new forms of narration where the boundaries between reality and fiction become labile for a poetic representation of places and people.

BELOVED ONES as a whole is a multidisciplinary work in four chapters, aimed at investigating boundaries and boundaries – geographic, human and existential – and to investigate otherness, through a new vision of identity. It is therefore not limited to being exclusively an artistic research, but rather a moment of personal reflection and self-reflection.

In the first chapter of BELOVED ONES, exhibited at the HIT Gallery in Bratislava and curated by Lydia Pribisová, the artist proposes a sort of archeology of the impossible of his Austro-Hungarian ancestors, deconstructing reality and creating an ‘other’ scenario to part of the prejudices that define the existence of individuals.

On the occasion of the inauguration of the Oderzo exhibition, on May 19th at 6 pm, a conversation will take place between the artist and the curator Carlo Sala.

It will follow, on May 29 at 20:30 at the TRA – TREVISO RICERCA ARTE, a conversation between the artist, the curator Carlo Sala, the art critic and historian Simonetta Lux and the writer, sociologist and journalist Ulderico Bernardi.

________

THE ABSENT JOURNEY is an introduction to the artistic production of César Meneghetti, consolidated in recent years in Europe and held in various parts of the world. This platform will open the way for an interdisciplinary dialogue covering emergency issues that address two apparently disconnected critical elds: groups in territories of social fragility and the creative use of technology in the arts, relating them in a new way for a greater understanding of the meaning of life and of creation in our time.

After attending several biennials and museums and galleries abroad, César Meneghetti brings to his native town São Paulo a selection of long-term works conceived in several countries in the last 10 years: Italy, Niger, Slovakia, Vietnam and a last one in Brazil, collaborating with the collective casadalapa of São Paulo. These works are generally the result of several years of research and development involving minorities – people and contexts of social fragility. In this way, the project becomes not only artistic, but also authentic in a moment of re ection and self-re ection. Aspiring artists with disabilities, African peasants, Vietnamese ecologists who struggle against the evils of globalization, or dwellers of the brough of Campos Elísios, testimonies of reality in “Crackland” are presented in their truth. Re ections point to a different way of experiencing a concept of the “other”, of the diverse, the otherness, of the precarious conditions and thus elaborate views and inclusive spaces offering an alternative to the prevailing logic.

“Living is living together. We are incomplete and unfinished beings because one does not exist without the other.
Art cannot achieve its objective if it precludes something or someone.”
César Meneghetti

After his presence at the 55th Venice Biennale of 2013, the exhibition by César Meneghetti presents at MAXXI a new series of works born within the ambit of the I\O_ IO È UN ALTRO project.

In Meneghetti’s works the disabled people met by the artist present themselves as persons, perfectly capable of producing thought, space and vision, persons that know, remember, valuate, work, love and create.

Over the course of four years, the research phase of this project has involved over 200 people with mental disabilities who live in the capital, through a multidisciplinary approach realised with the Art Workshops of the Comunità di Sant’Egidio in order to investigate the concept of confines.

The long process of research and education, workshop and creative actions will be narrated in the book that will accompany the exhibition I\O _IO È UN ALTRO, putting up for discussion the idea of ability/disability, frequently founded on prejudice.

special guests tereza de arruda, simonetta lux, fabrizio pizzuto (art critics and curators)

and giuseppe bocassini,  marcio marques, veronika de rycke, gloria fwakiadi

“César Meneghetti has created a complex work in two overlapping styles – art / document: a form of praxis based on the reciprocal incursion and confrontation of compensation within the creative flow of daily life” writes art historian and critic Simonetta Lux in her forward to the exhibition at the Museum Lab of Contemporary Art of Rome. “In his work the disposition of traces, material or immaterial, recodified in flux, converge with the human condition, the emotions, and the problems he encounters and experiences upon his way throughout the world – from Brazil to Italy from the Orient to Africa – and he manages to capture them in art, to discover innovative transnational interconnections and turn them into language, into work, into art: a singular manner of communicating and sharing, which art alone can reveal”.

Composed initially for a series of 8 main oeuvres (video, photography, installation and documentation), K_lab – interacting on the reality interface narrates, documents, and analyses the work of the mostly female population in its fight against desertification and the struggle for water in the Keita Valley, the region situated between the Sahel and Central Africa.

Until the 10th of January 2015 at the UNDER THE MANGO TREE GALLERY the video works K 03_the last slate (12 video series, 86”, HD, colour), K 05_still femmes (video, 15 min. HD colour), K 06_01011001 (triptych video, 4’, 10’ e 11’, HD, colour), part of the relational, processual, and multimedia project K_lab – interacting on the reality interface, built in Niger and Italy (2007/2009) and the new unreleased works (K 09_CMD+C_CMD+V, K_10_CMD+C_CMD+V and K_11) made specially for this occasion will be shown.

On occasion of the opening there will be a talk entitled ART – INTERACTING ON THE REALITY INTERFACE on 06 November @ 18:30 with artist César Meneghetti, art historian and curator Tereza de Arruda, art historian, art critic and curator Simonetta Lux, and Philipp Wagnitz (WWF – Water Stewardship Officer) on Meneghetti’s experience as well as how art can change the interface of the real world. The Gallery’s director Mini Kapur will moderate.

TO KNOW MORE ABOUT PROJECT K_

From 1983 to 2008 the international community (FAO, WFP) – and in particular the Italian Agency for Cooperation together with the Government of Niger – developed a programme for the Rural Development of Keita, which was aimed at relieving the affected area and aiding in its development. The Keita Valley in Niger was in full crisis, hit by desertification, deforestation, agricultural collapse, population increase, and male rural exodus. In 1984 a catastrophic drought devastated the entire area and its 100,000 inhabitants. But the rebirth of Keita is mostly due to the extraordinary activity of its inhabitants, most of whom are women, as portrayed in K 05_still femmes. In replanting almost 30 million new trees, the natural advance of the desert was halted, and they were able to rebuild the economic life of the entire area: a rocky lunar landscape plagued by difficulty of access and water shortage, as is seen the triptych K_06. The sounds and voice of the rap lyrics come from the unique female rapper of Western Africa, ZM (Zara Moussa), entitled “Ma Rage”, and have been re-arranged and re-mixed by DJ Matthew Mountford.

During several missions from June to November of 2007 the artist César Meneghetti, the Italian photographer Enrico Blasi, and British video-maker Sam Cole documented the daily struggle of the local population. Meneghetti collected people’s testimonies, thoughts, emotions, and reflections on love, life and death: in short, their basic concepts of existence. This was the basis for the creation of “Keita Laboratory”, and then K_lab, a multidisciplinary artistic and interactive project that worked as an observatory, a container of ideas, of cultures and concepts. Furthermore, it served as a collision between a concept and reality in order to express the morphologic harshness of the landscape but also the hard work of the local population. Portraits, details, testimonies, and landscapes both represent and reveal the deep sense of “place”. The borders of reality and the technological interface, while the document, the narration, and the sociological converge, launching a multiple approach to a single object of observation. Reality and imagination ultimately establish an unusual relationship of complicity with the spectator.

THE WANDERERS FOR WATER

We are pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Berlin based Italian-Brazilian conceptual (video filmmaker/ photo- grapher) artist Cesar Meneghetti. Combining formal clarity with a strong compassion for his subjects, Cesar gives us a personal and straightforward view of the women he portrays.

Cesar’s work is built upon a sense of trust and kinship, achieved through long-term relationships with rural- organiza- tions, communities, and families. Commissioned for the documentation, for K_lab, he traveled to Keita Valley in Niger between 2004 & 2007 – to “document the life” in the valley.

Choosing his own representational knowledge which has a deep insight into the human existence, Cesar decided to take the portraits of the women who had planted 25 million trees over the last 20 years.
The story is not just about the tree plantation and revival of the basic economy of the Keita Valley; his documentation is decisively about the women who made it possible, despite having been deserted by their men in the wake of the traditions made easy – by repeating one word thrice: divorce, divorce, divorce. This documentation is also about how science from the European culture supported the Valley dwellers, bringing them hope and to dream for betterment of lives and how the politicians abandoned the project and once again left them alone.

Even today these women have to walk 9 Kms to fetch the water for their daily requirement.

The images were composed individually– the subjects, are for him individuals who deserve the same respect that anyone in any other part of the world deserves. Producing striking photographs where the women pose alone, often looking straight into the camera. In a traditional patriarchal society where the freedom of girls and women is constantly restricted, and questioned, this process gave them a moment to reflect on their individual existence, on their individual wishes and experience a degree of independence and self respect. Meeting their intent, sometimes almost defiant eyes, we witness a moment of nascent self-determination. To survive.

With only a few simple elements, Meneghetti does a lot. The women are posed in front of mud huts, almost all are perhaps, standing at the same point – all against the similar background – but an individual existence. Relating to each other and the viewer through eyes. The interplay between subjects and background creates a delicate balance, deli- berating the viewer to concentrate on the human. These photographs are accompanied by documentary, where Cesar clearly brings life to the their existence. In the gradual overlapping of the portraits, he masters the impact of a feeling of many individuals belonging to the source of one destiny. Here, the structure is narrative rather than conceptual, offering intimate glimpses into inner maps by erasing the line between photographer and the observer.

Simple, alone and strong. In his works, the observer becomes the observed answerable to oneself.

K_ v.3  São Paulo  selected works from K_lab – interacting on the reality interface

PAÇO DAS ARTES  – SÃO PAULO

> 8th March to 06th April 2014

special guests solange farkas (curator), marie ange bordas (artist), priscila arantes (paço director and curator).

Serão apresentados no Paço duas obras complementares do projeto “K_”: K 05_still femmes (vídeo, 15 min.

K_ v.2 Bellaria Egea Marina  selected works from K_lab – interacting on the reality interface

36A ART GALLERY – Bellaria Special Event of the Bellaria Film Festival > 2nd June to 30th June 2009.

K_ v.1 Roma  K_lab – interacting on the reality interface

MLAC – Museo Laboratorio di Arte Contemporanea di Roma > 3rd December 2008 to 30th January 2009

in collaborazione con Enrico Blasi, Sam Cole e Matthew Mountford

a cura di simonetta lux e domenico scudero

K_lab – interacting on the reality interface opens on Wednesday December 3rd at MLAC – Museum Laboratory of Contemporary Art, University of Rome “La Sapienza”. An art project by César Meneghetti made in collaboration with Enrico Blasi and Sam Cole. The sound design is by Matthew Mountford. The event is curated by Simonetta Lux and Domenico Scudero.

During the 1970s the Keita Valley, in Niger was in full crisis, hit by desertification, deforestation, agriculture collapse, population increase and rural exodus. In 1984 a catastrophic drought devastated the whole area and its 100,000 inhabitants. At the beginning of 1983, the Italian Agency for Cooperation together with the Government of Niger, developed a programme for the Rural Development of Keita aimed to relieve the affected area and aid its development. Almost 30 million new trees were replanted and the natural advance of the desert was halted. But the rebirth of Keita is mostly due to the extraordinary activity of its inhabitants.

From June to November of 2007, during several missions César Meneghetti, Enrico Blasi and Sam Cole documented the daily struggle of the local population. They collected people’s testimonies, thoughts, emotions and reflections on love, life and death. This was the basis for the creation of “ K laboratory”, an artistic multidisciplinary and interactive project. An observatory, a container of ideas, of cultures and concepts. The material collected was edited and developed in this first phase of the laboratory and the results are: video (le dernière clapper and stills/meneghetti), 8 channel videoinstallation (videocabina#2/meneghetti, 4scapes/cole), photographs (blasi/meneghetti), soundscapes (mountford). The aim is to express the morphologic harshness of the landscape but also the hard work of the local population. Portraits, details, testimonies, landscapes reveal the deep sense and the representation of “place”. The borders of reality and the technological interface, the document, the narration, the sociological converge, launching a multiple approach on a single object of observation. Reality and imagination ultimately establish an unusual relationship of complicity with the spectator. The MLAC will be this first gallery to present this work. This “work in progress” will be developed, transformed and is intended to travel to other cities like Florence, São Paulo, Paris, Havana, Berlin as well as Keita Valley in Niger.

———-

K_lab – interacting on the reality interface

The project is a very deep documentation of a reforestation process that took place in Niger after a climate disaster. During the 70’s Keita Valley, in Niger was in full crisis, hit by desertification, deforestation, agriculture collapse, population increase and rural exodus. In 1984 a catastrophic drought devastated the whole area and its 100.000 inhabitants. The most interesting thing is that all the process was made in a completely sustainable way: no big dams to hold water, no big excavations to reforest, no foreign companies with impressive tools, but a series of micro interventions directly made by local population, with their knowledge and work, combined with the help of scientists. And it worked. The desert has been stopped and the valley is now alive again.

The artistic project consists in a series of video-installation and big photographic portraits that want to give voice to Keita people and to their work. From June to November of 2007, during several missions César Meneghetti, Enrico Blasi and Sam Cole documented the daily struggle of the local population. They collected people’s testimonies, thoughts, emotions and reflections on love, life and death. This was the basis for the creation of “K laboratory”, an artistic multidisciplinary and interactive project. An observatory, a container of ideas, of cultures and concepts. The material collected was edited and developed consists in seven video installations by César Meneghetti and one by Sam Cole, photographs by Enrico Blasi and sound by Matthew Mountford.

PAÇO DAS ARTES  – SÃO PAULO

> 8th March to 06th April 2014

special guests solange farkas (curator), marie ange bordas (artist), priscila arantes (paço director and curator).

Serão apresentados no Paço duas obras complementares do projeto “K_”: K 05_still femmes (vídeo, 15 min.

Other Brothers: César Meneghetti’s I\O project

San Servolo, a small island in the Venetian Lagoon, was the site of a historic 18th-century asylum, which closed in 1978 after psychiatric-care reforms went into effect across Italy. Now, San Servolo is home to Venice International University, a consortium of educational and cultural institutions. It is also the site of a major work by Italian-Brazilian artist César Meneghetti, whose project I\O_I Is an Other appears in this year’s Venice Biennial. The title is partly taken from a line by Arthur Rimbaud. Santa Feans have an opportunity to experience part of I\O at Currents 2013 at El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe, where Meneghetti’s I\O Opera #01, a video installation, is being shown. For the overall I\O project, four years in the making, Meneghetti collaborated with members of Rome’s Community of Sant’Egidio who were involved in an ongoing art lab program. The art lab works with the mentally and physically disabled — many of whom were directly affected by the closing of the hospitals in the late 1970s — allowing them opportunities for creative self-expression. San Servolo has been a major component of the project, because of its history. Meneghetti discusses I\O at Zane Bennett Contemporary Art (435 S. Guadalupe St., 982-8111) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 15.

I\O was conceived in several stages, which Meneghetti calls “verifications,” and culminated in a multimedia work. The first verification involved interviewing members of the community who then were given an opportunity to interview Meneghetti, volunteers from Sant’Egidio, and curators Simonetta Lux and Alessandro Zuccari. “We set up about 30 questions about some issues of existence: love, god, death, things like that,” Meneghetti said.
“I don’t call this an interview. It was a horizontal relationship. I observed them; they observed me. I never met, don’t have in my family, and don’t have friends who are disabled, so for me it was a way to break through this barrier of preconceptions. I think we did break this barrier.”

For the second verification Meneghetti taught the participants about new media. “We talked a lot about what is reality, and what is truth,” he said. “One of the issues was self-portraiture, how they see themselves and how they see the world — different from how I see or how we see the world as pseudo ‘normals.’ ”

The third verification was a type of conference that involved philosophers, writers, poets, art historians, and staff from the Franco Basaglia Foundation. (Basaglia, a psychiatrist, was an outspoken critic of Italy’s mental-health facilities and was instrumental in reforming them.) The conference was held at San Servolo. The fourth verification involved filming a series of workshops with deaf, autistic, and other mentally or physically challenged members of Sant’Egidio. Meneghetti later arranged the results into a video presentation. “They talk about love, about life, reality, discrimination,” he said. “Humanity is 360 degrees. If you exclude people for race, for religion, or for mental conditions you are missing something of humanity. That’s the thing.”

By doing a little visible fusion between geographic areas of East and West stands in a discussion pertaining to audio-visual concepts like truth and reality, producing a subversive operation of the real.
This book / catalogue aims to draw a timeline in recent years production of César Meneghetti until the work THIS_PLACEMENTS, a video installation that consists of four videos arranged in a sequence of continuous projection, as if it were a single traveling shot. The assembly of the four projections, four realities symbolize also some geographical locations of his previous research: Africa (Niamey, Niger), Asia (Hanoi, Vietnam), Europe (Venice, Italy) and America (Recife, Brazil). The four cities viewed simultaneously both from the metaphor of the window and an imaginary route which establishes a virtual dialogue between different cultures through art and free interpretation of different realities.
The series THIS_PLACEMENTS (singular and plural) enquires about the perception of a landscape that does not exist, and on the concept of displacement of time and space, thus creating a new virtual anthropo-geographic reality specular or in contradiction of globalization. The work unites the Brazilian city of Recife (site specific recorded images) to the other three cities in the world where the artist held earlier works and research to put side by side the question of interconnection of networks and to make a metaphor for an unique imaginary excursion on transposable spaces that can not be described or drawn on any map, because it does not belong to any system.
East and West here acquire a new dimension and urban areas, people, details overlap or fade in layers until they become pure flow.

The work of César Meneghetti looks like a constellation, thickened around the central theme of borders, defined as the separation and transition from one condition to another, and which the split-screen turns to trope. The line – which divides the colour and black and white screen area, for example, or divide the realistic shootings from the digital elaboration, and even the chromatic inserts applied simulates a collage – it is permeable, so that images spend freely from one half to the other. More like a frontier that no one front, one might say, with perhaps an image dear to the artist and filmmaker Italo-Brazilian who moves to ease between techniques, languages and different professional roles, so that in his search for the film, video and photography seem to pass its testimony. The stylistic solution reiterated by Meneghetti becomes a metaphor for the dichotomy that permeates his work including the abandonment of naturalism and the attraction for the immediate force of reality. The author captures it with in stills or in moving image, which is used to explore the social environment or to live the memories with the same “distracted attention” that allows him to absorb the atmosphere of places, to go beyond the mistrust to get in touch with people in search of what lies beneath the surface tensions and paradoxes, oxymorons and analogies, the wrecks of a world reduced to silence by historical, social or cultural. Despite the distinctions of gender, in fact, a common concern across both his films and documentaries, or his artistic pieces. The first stay in the Far East of Meneghetti is the origin of THIS_ORIENT (2010), a series of four videos produced specifically to this solo exhibition, where the urban or natural landscape, faces, sounds are transformed into abstract digital elements – overlaps, slowdowns, sunburns, induced noise or random pixilation – that propel the original scenarios beyond the limits of detectability, to feel abstract. The moving image of wires against the sky are transformed here into bars of a cage, folded tents or forest of films blown by the wind of electrons: the eye veil, barrier beyond which push or behind which refuge, network communication between the mesh However, the time slips away. The slow rhythms, and enveloping sounds (soudscapes by Matthew Mountford), conveying a meditative aspect to this altarpiece mail that, in different forms of repetition, hypnotic touches outcomes: an invitation to send in depth, therefore, and to avoid the fascination of exploring extensively. Meneghetti, this time seems to have been captured by an interior melody, like a vortex that transports him to a regeneration of Vision, toward pure images.

The political discourse becomes artThe creative use of video as a medium is, in many cases, the best tool to narrate tragedy poetically, a poetry of images but also – as is in the case of Meneghetti’s work – of words, following a strongly graphic mix that generates a formidable plot of signs. Les terra’s di nadie, based on repertoire images (found-footage) introduces a very powerful visual as well as conceptual layout. Very successful is the splitting of the shot in two portions in various moments of the movie, at times a bichromatic partition that traces a line on the screen, a sharp border. This is probably a metaphor of the limit between democracy and dictatorship, between good and evil, between a normal life and an existence violated, deprived of any rights. The black-and-white images, either TV movies or newsreel clips, despite their content showing soldiers, arms, scenes of repression and violence, in Meneghetti’s experimental aesthetics, become a mere texture, generated by continuous intermittences and interferences; a texture that maintains figurative elements but is anyway an abstract background on which the artist inserts a text, some words, sentences, thoughts, fragments of emotions.
Les terra’s di nadie is a political poem, prayer, warning, confession, testimony and denunciation. It is the tale of all possible dictatorships, both of the past and the present, and unfortunately of the future. A bewildering, syncretic and synchronic narration whose strength lies in the pulsating power of the image that becomes a sign. From the insertion of stroboscopic effects, where shadows of bodies describe a blinding and endless hell, to the epilogue in which we only see a military aircraft circling over the town buildings, fast and elusive, like the violence of power. Almost invisible, like the victims of a coup that vanish into thin air. Brazil, Chile, Argentina are the dictatorships that are geographically closest to the artist, but the language mix that, apart from Portuguese and Spanish, extends to Italian and French, makes this creative video a universal allegory. In Les terra’s di nadie the political discourse becomes art, because art is nearly always the only way to express a political vision and, above all, the only tool able to stage horror, in other words, the unperformable.

The images on the water veil multiply and subdivide in search of a narrative order for a drama. The steamer, the Palladian church and the bell tower of San Giorgio Maggiore are fragments of the landscape registered by an eye that is about to plunge.
On the surface, slow waves and swift foams split into horizontal stripes, running at different paces.
Metallic sounds evoke waves, engines, reminding us of bronze bells. But they are just fragments, noises. Our gaze sinks into waters that surround everything: a liquid territory that unites, keeps at a distance, wraps, feeds and threatens to devour the dream of a town built on water. Requiem is a prayer for eternal rest. It is the first word of the Christian liturgy for the peace of the dead. Requiem aeternam. The end of life.
Irma Arestizábal passed away suddenly, less than one month before the inauguration of the Venice Biennale. With her, the sense of the project she had asked César Meneghetti to fulfil also got lost: a personal interpretation of the Latin-American Pavilion under his curatorship; an exhibit she never saw completed. The Argentine curator had also planned other initiatives involving the Brazilian artist – so Italian in terms of education and experience – used to the heterogeneity of languages; a militant in the transposition of cultural barriers.
On the surface of a squared, graph screen it seems like César wants to organize his ideas, compose an irremediably lost image that will never again be possible to recompose. The ancient resource of subdivision retains the memory of sinoples, the basis for frescoes since the Roman art, an immanent reference for an artist who makes cinema and video, working with so-called mixed media but who started with painting.
With quick impressions, César registers hundreds of fragments, photograms, splashes of colour, has recourse to a pointillism made of pixels, fractals and uncertain geometries which follow one another in a zigzag line of time, of arts passing by; an eternal return to the history of the lagoon town, the mother of all biennial exhibitions.
The reflections of light, the liquid outlines, it is not clear if they are projections or apparitions that are about to disappear in the water. The human faces cannot take shape. The images recorded by the camcorder are altered by the artist who tries to turn them into an eloquent sign, capable of indicating something transcendent; be it just a brief vision created by the movement of water around the ropes that sink in the channels: the promise of something that is not visible._elisa_byington _brtxt_ roma road to contemporary art 2010 iila pavilion

This Orient di César Meneghetti

K_ v.2 Bellaria Egea Marina  selected works from K_lab – interacting on the reality interface

36A ART GALLERY – Bellaria Special Event of the Bellaria Film Festival > 2nd June to 30th June 2009.

The borders of reality and the technological interface, the document, the narration, the sociological converge, launching a multiple approach on a single object of observation. Reality and imagination ultimately establish an unusual relationship of complicity with the spectator. The material collected was edited and developed consists in seven video installations by César Meneghetti and one by Sam Cole, photographs by Enrico Blasi and sound by Matthew Mountford.

A WOR(L)DY RESEARCH ON HUMAN STORIES

una ricerca della condizione umana nella contemporaneità

From May the 7th to the 11th, 2009 inside the TEKFESTIVAL, at the Space for new visions at Cinema Nuovo Aquila, it will be exhibited VIDEOCABINE by César Meneghetti. This artistic audiovisual project (working in progress) has beginning in 2001 inside a documentary film, and it has been developed to design a small visual and sonorous human atlas. The VIDEOCABINA (videobooth) is a metaphor of a non-place, transportable and where people were invited to express freely their own ideas on existence. Living portraits, testimonials of the inhabitants of various regions of the planet. Interviews of men and women, who tell their way of conceiving the world. A space simulacra of the human condition where Europe, Africa, America, Asia and Oceania are connected and isolated at the same time. In this not-place, a sense of culture and belonging to the humanity is recreated. To this first appointment, it will be introduced VIDEOCABINA #1 (Italy) and #2 (Niger).

VIDEOCABINE

vai all’articolo di meltin’ pot

VIDEOCABINA #1: VIDEOSABINA (ITALY, EUROPE July 2006)

Inside of a video-booth placed in the public square of a village, the inhabitants of a small country of the Sabina tell an ancient ritual, been born like religious festivity in order to honor the Corpus Domini. The information is accumulated, more often contradicted… but it is a rare opportunity to reveal itself, place and people, a way to speak about life, death, art, love, mankind, God. Made in collaboration with Elisabetta Pandimiglio and Enrico Blasi.

VIDEOCABINA #2: (NIGER, AFRICA, June 2007 / December 2008)

VIDEOCABINA #2 is a document / documentation on the human condition and the social economic aspects, where a enormous amount of people are invited to talk about life, about God, about love and about themselves. A search between south and northern hemisphere, in a small village Keita, in Niger, according to the UN one of the poorest areas in Africa. Keita is also a key place because last 20 years its inhabitants are struggling against the desertification together with the international community, in particular with the Italian Cooperation, an task unit of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is also part of the project K_lab interacting on the reality interface, in collaboration with the protographer Enrico Blasi and the videoreporter Sam Cole.

The Tunnel is the first collaboration started in 2005 between the Brazilian visual artist César Meneghetti and the poet Carlos Nejar, one of the few Brazilian writers to be nominated for the Literature Nobel prize in 2001. This work is also the first of a new series of intersemiotic videos by Meneghetti. The Tunnel is also a metaphor used very frequently in his work and making the video were a natural  consequence. The Tunnel were first presented at the 51 Venice Biennale, Isle of poetry curated by Achille Bonito Oliva and in the tramonto latinoamericano event curated by Antonio Arevalo.

SINOPSIS

AGAINST THE INDIFFERENCE

The tunnel is a metaphor of the incommunicability that reigns in our times, of disaffection, of lack of solidarity, of alienation of the individuals. The tunnel is also our anguish, is the man alone, with his egotism, his fears, anxieties. The tunnel is inside and outside us, is our world of indifferent people to others pain’s among the violence that surround us and seldom do not fight against enough. The death people are the bureaucrats, the conformists, the satisfied people, the alienated, the neutrals, the indifferents, those who have “fixed eyes”, “the providents”, the ones that always leave for later, those who are sterile and dead and did not realised. And the living people? The living people are the opposite, the “unfaithful” to the tunnel, the rebels, the ones who cry and have cold and fear, they are a community / sob o Túnel, / aldeia mínima. / Como as formigas (a community under the Tunnel, / minimal country. Like little ants), that the poet discovers only when starts to get out of himself and to perceive the reality instable and the variety around him. The people alive are rare, precarious, fragile (…) The Tunnel is one of the verses present in the poem “My beloved living people”, Nemar, Vitoria, 1991 and Multimedia Edizioni, Salerno 2004.

E i vivi?
